We have been REALLY busy with keeping the plants strong and healthy and I learned a few tricks about growing plants overall, and some tips about growing herbs that I hadn't known before. The Herb and Vegetable plant sales were far better than the Tomato plants and I am still sitting on roughly 300 Tomato Plant varieties that aren't yet planted, sold or traded with the neighbours. I don't wish to compost the lot so we have been discussing options to best use up the current plants and I'll be growing a few more based on our discussions too.
My friend has been looking into a small stall at a Farmer's market and will take the new herbs that have been started, a few flowers and some specialty containers I have been putting together to help fill the space. I have started several more Herbs to ensure we have enough inventory. With luck, all of the old and new plants will be sold later in the year. I can spend a bit more energy taking care of them until then. I'll be working on their presentation too, nice new pots have been purchased and I'll be transplanting most of this week.
I should be back to cooking by the beginning of next week, and with the abundance of Herbs at my disposal, I'll be able to discuss how to use fresh herbs in your recipes. I've discovered a broad range of Basil and the plants all have very unique flavours. I'm in heaven!
I love to experiment and this little plant experiment was a lot more work than I had anticipated, and I didn't think my success rate with the seedlings would be as abundant as it was. I don't own a green house and had to take several extra steps to ensure what I had grown would be ready to sell and healthy by the time May came. I quite literally climbed my basement stairs 100 times a day for six weeks to harden off the plants. I'll explain more later.
I'll be posting about the whole experience, there are a lot of different things I've learned this year, I'd love to share with others who are as pationate about flavours as I am.
A few images for now.
Have a great week!
