On occasion I post my my thoughts instead of a recipe. This post does relate to food as I have been considering how the generational gaps, changes to food manufacturing and produce distribution have changed HOW and WHAT we eat. I have an idea floating around in my busy brain, blogging about Food and creating Recipes has really opened up my eyes to how we choose our ingredients, meals, and why.
We both made Pizza for dinner last night, Thin Crust with Olive Oil as the base. My Husband picked up ingredients, and brought home Pepperoni for his Pizza. I used Chicken and Avocado on mine. This is what got me thinking and why I have been mulling this topic, "What is the next generation eating and what has all of this new technology and fast living done to us?"
This morning, on a whim, I looked up the definition of Millennial's, which took me to several pages on Wikipedia, and a few other sites.
To start with, Generations:
My Grandparents were considered - "The Silent Generation".
My Parents are the beginning of what is known as "The Baby Boom Generation".
My Husband was born at the tail end of the same Generation,
I was born into "Generation X".
The current Generation, now having kids, raising their families and, a decade younger than myself are considered "Generation Y" or the "Millennial's"
Their Children maybe known as the "Generation Z", "I Gen", "Centennial's" or "Post-Millennial's". There are many names for this upcoming generation and it is not absolutely defined yet, obviously due to how young this generation is, and, until more time has past.

Each Generation is defined by points in history, the economics and the years they were born, but I have noticed that certain traits from each generation do overlap with the other as they transition. My Parents do have several traits from the Silent Generation and my Husband's traits are more reflective of my Generation, "Gen X"* as coined by Douglas Coupland*. There are, however, a large portion of his traits which come from the Baby Boomers and his upbringing.
These traits are what got me thinking about Generational eating habits. There is a difference.
Food over the Generations and Marketing
I have been considering the history that helped change how and what we eat. I may have to do several posts on this topic. It's quite vast, and I do have a lot to discuss.
I have recently finished a book called "The Dorito Effect" by Mark Schartzker. A wonderful book and an eye opening "look" at how much Food and it's production has changed in the last century. We can absolutely thank technology and science for creating "safer" foods and an abundance of it.
Unfortunately we all pay a price for those ever increasing leaps and bounds into flavour technology. I agree with much of his thinking. Since I started blogging I have become even more aware of what I have eaten in the past, what I eat today, and what changes I will be making to my own diet to ensure I am getting the correct balance of nutrition, not just calories.
I will have to post more often on this topic. It is far to complex to delve into in a single post. You may find a few more of my musing mixed into this blog as well as the new recipes I am creating.
